Doctors say that City Councilwoman-elect Ruth Galanter will be released from the hospital in time to be sworn into office July 1, according to her chief deputy, Marcela Howell. Galanter, 46, defeated 17-year incumbent Council President Pat Russell in a runoff election last week. Galanter campaigned from her hospital bed at UCLA Medical Center, where she is being treated for stab wounds in the neck inflicted by an intruder into her home last month. She underwent surgery twice and continues to speak in a hoarse voice. She also has had trouble swallowing and eating solid food, but doctors have said she will recover completely from her injuries, Howell said.
