State Senate Rejects Tax Rebate

SACRAMENTO — The state Senate today passed and sent to Gov. George Deukmejian a bill to give schools and community colleges the $700 million that the governor wants to rebate to the taxpayers.
A 25-12 vote gave final approval to the bill, which faces almost a sure veto from the Republican governor. “Simply because the governor wants a tax rebate, why should we force the schools to fall further and further behind?” asked Senate President Pro Tem David A. Roberti (D-Los Angeles).
