Young Sees No Conviction for Bond Probe Role
Mayor Andrew Young said Thursday he is confident that he will not be convicted if he is indicted on charges of obstructing justice in the drug investigation of civil rights activist Julian Bond.
“I have confidence there’s no jury that’s been impaneled that could convict me of what I’ve done,” Young said. “I have a hard time seeing that I’ve done something wrong in this.”
During a news conference, Young said he also would be surprised if an indictment is returned for his phone call to Bond’s estranged wife, Alice, before her scheduled interview with police and FBI agents following up on her charges about alleged drug use by Bond, Young and other prominent Atlantans.
Bond and the mayor have denied using drugs.
“If I’m indicted for placing a phone call to a friend in the United States of America in 1987--that might happen in Cambodia or South Africa--but I’d be surprised if it should happen in the United States of America,” Young said.
