A Newport Beach woman who underwent two liver-transplant operations in two weeks at a Pittsburgh hospital was reported in fair condition Monday.

Barbara Jernigan, 50, is recovering at Pittsburgh’s Presbyterian University. Her body rejected the liver of the first donor, a 16-year-old girl, on June 11, and her second transplant was last Thursday.

Jernigan, founder of the PMS Center of Orange County, was stricken with primary biliary cirrhosis, an incurable disease unrelated to alcohol.

A “Friends of Barbara” group has been formed, and its members have raised about $40,000 to help pay hospital bills.
