The Republican National Committee’s fund raising is more than $2 million below its 1987 target, a shortfall that party officials blamed on the Iran- contra affair, the furor over television ministers and competition from the party’s big presidential field. Meeting in New Orleans, the city that will host the 1988 nominating convention, party leaders were told that the committee had cut back its activities because contributions in the first five months of the year were about 8% less than expected. Officials plan to raise $35 million this year, not $37.7 million as earlier budgeted.
