PEE-WEE AND CBS PREVAIL WITH EMMYS
CBS and “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” were the major winners as Daytime Emmy Awards in creative arts and technical fields were presented here Sunday afternoon. CBS picked up 17 Emmys, more than half the total awards, while “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” captured six, the most for one show. “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” won for graphics/title design, art/set/scenic design, makeup, hairstyling, film sound mixing and video tape editing. However, Pee-wee’s alter ego, Paul Rubens, failed to pick up the Emmy for outstanding performer in children’s programming. That award went to Madeline Kahn for her work on the “ABC Afterschool Special: Wanted: The Perfect Guy.”
The most-honored soap opera was CBS’ “The Young and the Restless,” which won four Emmys.
Public television programs won six Emmys on Sunday, ABC and NBC both got four and two Emmys went to syndicated shows.
Sunday’s nontelevised ceremonies at the Registry Hotel were a lead-in to today’s 14th annual Daytime Emmys, which will be televised from New York City by ABC at 2 p.m. (Channels 7, 3, 10, 42). Oprah Winfrey will host.
