Pyewacket Setting Near-Record Pace in Transpac Race
Led by Roy Disney’s Nelson-Marek 70 sloop, Pyewacket, out of the California Yacht Club, the Class A yachts were setting a sizzling pace Saturday in the 2,225-mile Transpacific race from Los Angeles to Honolulu.
At the 8 a.m. Saturday roll call, Pyewacket had logged 466 miles in 43 hours since the 1 p.m. Thursday start.
Winds were still in the 15- to 20-knot range from the north-northwest and were pushing leaders at average speeds in excess of 10 knots.
Three miles astern of Pyewacket was Bob McNulty’s Santa Cruz-70, Blondie, of the Los Angeles Yacht Club.
Other Class A leaders were Hotel California, 447 miles; Citius, 444; Pandemonium, 442; Cheetah, 438; Ragtime, 433, and Merlin, 425.
Pyewacket’s average speed has been 10.8 knots. Average speed for the 67-foot Merlin when she established an elapsed-time record of 8 days 11 hours in 1977 was 10.9 knots. Pyewacket and Blondie were also leading the 55-boat fleet on corrected time.
