Track and Field Roundup : Heike Drechsler Wins Long Jump but Is Beaten in 100

East Germany’s Heike Drechsler won the women’s long jump but was beaten in the 100-meter dash Wednesday at a Mobil Grand Prix track and field meet in East Berlin.

Drechsler jumped 23 feet 8 inches before an Olympic Day crowd of 22,000 at Jahn Sports Park. She missed a double victory when Silke Gladisch won the women’s 100 in 11.15 seconds, 5/100ths of a second faster than Drechsler.

American Mike Conley long jumped 27-3 3/4 to beat East Germany’s Jens Hirschberg (26-8).

Stanley Floyd of the United States battled a headwind to win the 100 meters in 10.45. “The Berlin public was fantastic,” Floyd said. “That fired me up to a good effort.”

Americans took the first three places in the 200 meters. Thomas Jefferson won with a time of 20.61 seconds, followed by Dennis Mitchell and Floyd.

Thomas Schoenlebe of East Germany won the 400 meters in 45.45, ahead of Cuba’s Roberto Hernandez, and Canada’s Mark McKoy won the 110-meter hurdles in 13.62.

In field events, East German Ulf Timmermann put the shot 71-0 1/2 to win, and Viktor Jevsjukov of the Soviet Union took the javelin with a toss of 277-3, ahead of Tom Petranoff of the United States.

Tonie Campbell of the United States was timed in 13.46 seconds as he won the rain-swept 110-meter hurdles in the Berne International meet at Berne, Switzerland.

West Germany’s Harald Schmid, the European champion, won the 400-meter hurdles in 48.28.

Joaquim Cruz, the 1984 Olympic gold medalist from Brazil, competed for the first time in the 800 meters this year and won in 1:45.74.

The crowd of 4,500 in Neufeld Stadium also saw American Larry Myricks win the long jump with a leap of 27 feet 7 1/2 inches.
