Watts Anchors 400 Relay Team to Victory
Tony Miller, Sean Roberts, Percy Knox and Quincy Watts--running for the West Valley Eagles Track Club--teamed to win the 400-meter relay in 40.9 seconds at an all-comers meet Wednesday night at Birmingham High.
It was the first time the group--a virtual high school all-star sprint team--had run together. Afterward, Eagles Coach Hilliard Sumner said that the foursome is capable of breaking the national record for 17- and 18-year-olds of 39.98 within a few weeks.
Chris Schallert of the Gardena Valley Runners won the 3,000 in the 19-29 division in 8:40. Brian Russell, formerly of Notre Dame and UCLA, finished second in 8:50. Ian Alsen, who will be a senior at Granada Hills High, won the 3,000 in the 16-18 division in 8:51.
Bryan Dameworth, who just completed his freshman year at Agoura High, won the 1,500 in the 16-18 division in 4:10.1.
