Television evangelist the Rev. Robert Schuller of the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove and 10 other leading TV evangelists have been invited to testify later this month at congressional hearings on the tax-exempt status of TV ministries, a spokesman for Schuller said Wednesday. A letter from Rep. J. J. Pickle (D-Tex.,), chairman of the oversight subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee, said that the subcommittee wanted to learn more about the accounting and spending practices of the ministries. “Recent events surrounding PTL have cast a cloud around television evangelical ministries which I feel need to be explored more fully in public,” Pickle wrote.
