TV GARBAGE

Thanks for running “Garbage Pail Kids’ Plunked On TV,” by Diane Haithman (July 8), which let us TV viewers know how low our networks will stoop to make money and increase ratings.

As a teacher who confiscates these insulting cards when any of my students bring them to class, I’m appalled that Judy Price, CBS vice president of children’s programming, can describe a series made of characters who depict gruesomeness, torture and sadism as a “wacky, totally innocent” show that’s “going to be responsible.”

CBS is showing complete irresponsibility by airing such a degrading program that tells our children that it’s OK to poke fun at handicapped people and it’s OK to laugh at pain and disfigurement. I hope that all parents and teachers will write to CBS to voice their disapproval of such a program.

Our children need positive programs to influence them. They see enough hate and degradation in the real world. They don’t need to watch programs created by adults that encourage them to make fun of others and further lead to desensitizing their feelings of care and concern toward their fellow man.
