A locomotive rear-ended an underground train carrying workers to their posts inside a tunnel at the Nevada Test Site on Friday, injuring 23 people, federal officials said.

Three people were examined at Las Vegas hospitals, but none of the injured required hospitalization, said Chris West, a spokesman for the Department of Energy.

“It was nothing life-threatening,” West said. “It was mostly back injuries, sprains and pulled muscles.”

There was no radiation danger involved, West said, calling it “strictly an industrial accident.”

The accident occurred about 8 a.m. as the train was taking workers to their stations in a tunnel at Rainier Mesa, about 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
