The Carlsbad City Council has agreed to ask San Diego County officials to investigate the possibility of putting a dump on Camp Pendleton.

Although the proposal has been made before, the council voted unanimously Tuesday to ask that the Board of Supervisors again broach the matter with the Marine Corps.

Councilman John Mamaux suggested that the sprawling Marine Corps base be used as the site of a new trash dump because of the need for such a facility in North County. The San Marcos landfill, the only operating dump in the area, is slated to close in 1991.

Mamaux said that the military currently leases some base property for farming and that a similar arrangement could be worked out for a landfill.

But the proposal may not get very far. Military officials have opposed the idea of a trash dump on the base, pointing to security worries and potential problems with waste getting into the groundwater basin from which the base gets its drinking water.
