Sex With Boy Brings Jail Term

An El Cajon woman who repeatedly had sex with an adolescent boy at the urging of the boy’s father has been sentenced to one year in jail, placed on three years’ probation and ordered to pay a $300 fine.

Superior Court Judge Wayne Peterson barred Carole Swenson from contacting the boy, who was 11 to 14 when the incidents occurred. The judge also prohibited her from associating with the boy’s father, Clifford Wimberly, 37, of Santee, her co-defendant in the case.

Swenson, 23, could have received a six-year prison term--the sentence recommended by the county Probation Department. However, Deputy Dist. Atty. Michael Przytulski suggested the one-year term.

Became an Abuse Victim

Peterson said Friday that he viewed Swenson as a victim of abuse by Wimberly. According to a report by the Probation Department, Swenson said she feared Wimberly and therefore agreed to have sex with his son in various motels.

Wimberly is undergoing a diagnostic study at Chino State Prison. He is to be sentenced Sept. 21, at which time he could face 11 years in prison.

The case came to light Dec. 5 when the boy’s 16-year-old sister appeared at the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department substation in Santee. Turning over photographs of the incidents, she accused her parents of neglecting their children and spending money on alcohol and drugs.

Charges against the mother were dropped when her children declined to testify against her.

The charges against Swenson cited 21 incidents since 1984.

‘Afraid for Life’

“I feel really bad,” Swenson reportedly told a probation officer preparing the report. “I didn’t want to do the acts. I was afraid for my life and didn’t know what to do.”

Swenson pleaded guilty to performing lewd and lascivious acts with a minor. Wimberly pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting those acts.

“At some point in time, she crossed the line from being a co-defendant to being a co-victim in this case,” Peterson said.

He predicted it would take Swenson longer to recover from Wimberly’s psychological abuse than the boy to recover from the effects of the illicit acts.

Swenson will serve only 80 days because she received credit for nearly seven months in jail and for good behavior. She must register as a sex offender when she is released.
