The New York Yankees’ Don Mattingly: In his first 19 games since recovering from a back problem, Mattingly went 33 for 78 with 6 doubles, 10 homers, 22 runs scored and 31 runs batted in.

The Texas Rangers’ Charlie Hough: In his last two starts before the All-Star break, Hough set Ranger records for career victories and losses. His 6-4 loss to the Blue Jays at Toronto July 6 was No. 73 with the Rangers and his 6-2 win over Cleveland July 11 was his 94th with the Rangers. Ferguson Jenkins was the previous record-holder in both categories. Hough is 11-0 in his last 11 decisions against the Indians.

Chicago White Sox catcher Ron Karkovice: Once expected to fill Carlton Fisk’s shoes, he wasn’t even hitting Fisk’s uniform number when sent to the minors by the White Sox last week. Karkovice had 6 hits, 40 strikeouts and a .071 average in 85 at-bats. Fisk wears No. 72. The New York Yankees’ Wayne Tolleson: With only 5 extra-base hits in 88 games, the shortstop has a shot at the major league record of 11 for 150 or more games, set by Tom Tresh’s father, Mike, with the White Sox in 1945.

The Boston Red Sox catching trio: Rich Gedman, Marc Sullivan and Danny Sheaffer reached the All-Star break with more errors (9) than home runs (3) and almost as many passed balls (16) as RBIs (19). They were hitting a combined .182 with 69 strikeouts in 297 at-bats.

Boston’s Roger Clemens: Through his Thursday night start against the Oakland A’s, Clemens had walked 54 batters, compared to 67 all of last season.

The Baltimore Orioles: They opened the second half with a victory over the Royals at Kansas City, their second road win since May 25, a span during which they lost 15 road games. The St. Louis Cardinals: After they finish their current West Coast trip, they will play only five more games on grass.
