The Nation : Reported Crime Rises 6%
The FBI said seven major categories of reported crime rose 6% last year to the highest point since 1981, a development some researchers say signals rising crime levels for the rest of the decade. A total of 13.2 million serious offenses were reported to police in 1986. Violent crime was up 12% and property crime rose 6%. FBI crime levels have now risen for two straight years; increases were recorded in 1986 in 44 of the 50 states. Some of the increase can be attributed to a greater willingness by citizens in recent years to report crime. The six states where reported crime declined were Maine, Indiana, North Dakota, Delaware, Montana and Nevada.
