A bitter, seven-month strike against IBP ended as union workers overwhelmingly voted in Sioux City, Iowa, to accept a new four-year contract offer from the giant meatpacker. On a final tally of 752 to 108, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 222 agreed to return to work as soon as two weeks from now. The settlement maintains wage levels previously in effect for employees hired before Dec. 14, 1986, and gives them a 15-cent-an-hour increase in the third year. It also sets up a new employee wage tier, with competitive salaries, the firm said. About 2,800 workers have been affected.
