Two Win $2.1 Million Each in Pick Nine

Two winning tickets, each worth $2,168,338.60, were sold on the Pick Nine Sunday at Hollywood Park.

No one cashed the tickets. The $2.1-million payoff is believed to be a record, topping the $1.9-million ticket that Craig Phillips cashed on a Pick Nine last year at Santa Anita.

Hollywood Park’s Pick Nine pool had grown to $2.1 million through Saturday, with nobody picking all nine winners for 27 days, and the rules of the wager required that there be a payoff Sunday because the pool had gone over $2 million.

With that as a lure, 50,087 fans, the largest crowd of the season, bet $2.7 million on the Pick Nine Sunday, mushrooming the pool to $4.8 million.

With 10 races on Sunday’s card, the Pick Nine was the first nine races, and only three favorites won.

When the two winning tickets are cashed, Hollywood Park is required to withhold 20% for the federal government--a total of more than $866,000.
