Vikings’ Kramer Being Treated for Alcoholism
Minnesota Viking quarterback Tommy Kramer will miss part of training camp while he undergoes treatment for alcoholism, his agent said.
Kramer, 32, was arrested Friday night, charged with drunk driving and kept overnight in a detoxification center. Kramer, the NFC’s top-rated passer last year, voluntarily entered a rehabilitation program Saturday, Larry Zelle said.
Zelle said Kramer will not report next Monday when the Vikings open camp, but that he should be ready for Minnesota’s season opener Sept. 13 against the Detroit Lions.
Kramer, who was treated in 1982 for alcohol problems, vowed to make a second comeback.
“I’ll bounce back from this, but it’s unfortunate it had to happen,” he said. “I’ve been working very hard to get ready for the season and this is very disappointing.”
Kramer is scheduled to appear in Hennepin County, Minn., District Court Aug. 6 to face the drunk driving charge.
