The Salvation Army issued an emergency appeal for funds to keep its Meals on Wheels program on the road in the South Bay after a weekend burglary that damaged food supplies at the organization’s headquarters in Redondo Beach. Police said the intruders broke a window and fixed themselves a meal before vandalizing freezers, throwing meat and vegetables about the kitchen and stealing a stereo system, causing a loss of more than $5,000. The program that provides five lunches a week to about 125 elderly and disabled people in the area. Salvation Army Lt. Karla Russell said the appeal has generated more than $1,000 in cash and food so far. In an unrelated incident, a fire of suspicious origin caused $1.5 million damage to a Salvation Army thrift store in Long Beach. Officials said agents from the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms had joined in the arson investigation of the blaze at 1363 Alamitos Ave.
