Guatemala Says It Foiled Embassy Plot
The nation’s defense minister said today the Guatemalan army uncovered a guerrilla plot to seize a foreign embassy here during this week’s summit of Central American presidents.
The official, Gen. Hector Gramajo, specifically mentioned threats to the Canadian, Venezuelan and French embassies and said the army and police would strengthen already tight security to prevent any disruptions of the summit Thursday and Friday.
He refused to go into details other than to say security has been doubled at the airport and at the hotel where the foreign dignitaries will be staying.
Meanwhile, the start of a two-day meeting of foreign ministers from the five Central American nations was delayed today by bad weather that temporarily prevented the arrival of three diplomats. Heavy rains halted air traffic throughout much of Central America on Monday night and delayed the scheduled arrival of the foreign ministers of Costa Rica, Nicaragua and El Salvador until later today.
The meeting, aimed at ironing out final details for the presidential peace summit, was to have begun at 11:30 a.m. but was delayed indefinitely.
