Chargers’ Anderson Will Undergo Arthroscopic Surgery on Sore Ankle

Gary Anderson will undergo arthroscopic surgery to remove bone chips from his left ankle, Charger Coach Al Saunders said Monday.

Anderson, who plays running back and wide receiver, said he has had pain in the ankle off and on since the middle of last season. He reinjured it Sunday when someone fell on it during practice. The team decided to take X-rays as a precautionary measure, and the bone chips were found.

Doctors told Saunders that Anderson probably would miss about a week of practice.

“It’s the kind of thing that can be chronic if it is not treated right away,” Saunders said. “We thought it was best to get it flushed out now before it got to that point. It’s like having grains of sand in your joints.”

Both Saunders and Anderson said they thought the surgery would be performed sometime today.

“It bothers me when I try to make certain cuts,” Anderson said. “At least it’s not the kind of injury that’s going to keep me out for a while.”

Anderson was the Chargers’ most valuable player in 1986, when he had 2,022 total yards.
