“The Coltrane Legacy.” VAI. $39.95. Black-and-white footage shows John Coltrane playing tenor or soprano sax with Miles Davis in 1959 and with various small groups of his own in the early 1960s. There are two versions of his own “Impressions,” as well as his devastating assault on “My Favorite Things,” in which Eric Dolphy’s flute sounds oddly tentative to 1987 ears. Coltrane’s slow, pensive mood in “Alabama” shows him to best advantage. The 61 minutes are interwoven with comments by his sidemen, filmed in color. Elvin Jones, the drummer and main speaker, talks of his boss as “energetic yet calm, peaceful, spiritual . . . greater than life.” Information: (212) 799-7798. ***
