A judge in New York approved a plan to end the saga of the wandering garbage barge by burning its trash in Brooklyn and burying the ashes in Islip. In a 19-page ruling, State Supreme Court Justice Dominic J. Lodato dismissed opponents’ claims that the 3,100 tons of garbage was hazardous and that disposing of it would create a health nuisance. The barge left Long Island on March 22 and was refused permission to unload its cargo in five states and three countries. It returned to New York on June 17.
