In separate actions, the U.S. Border Patrol apprehended about 425 suspected illegal aliens in Southern California, most of them at the agency’s vehicle checkpoint on Interstate 5 near San Clemente. Another 50 aliens were arrested in Santa Fe Springs after they were seen fleeing from a stolen tractor-trailer rig in which they were locked for several hours. An estimated 375 aliens were stopped by a beefed-up contingent of 30 agents during a 5 1/2-hour span at the checkpoint. The aliens in the locked trailer were apprehended after Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies were tipped that they were inside. An unidentified person freed an estimated 100 aliens from the trailer and about half escaped before authorities arrived at the scene.
