The State Department, citing human rights considerations, today rejected a visa request from a Chilean marksman who was scheduled to take part in the Pan American Games in Indianapolis.

Department spokesman Charles Redman said the request from Francisco Zuniga, reputed to be a member of Chile’s secret police, was turned down because of evidence he had been linked to “a number of acts of political violence of the most extreme kind, including murder.” Zuniga faces charges in Chile of use of excessive force against reporters and demonstrators who were present at an anti-government protest in 1983.
