No Law Waiver in Colo. Tragedy

Colorado lawmakers, discounting the sympathetic promises of the governor, said today that bus passengers killed or injured by a boulder that fell on a mountain road after the huge rock was dislodged by a state highway worker will be limited to a share of $400,000 in compensation.

Gov. Roy Romer, speaking Monday within a few hours of the freak accident that killed seven and injured 15, had said the state was responsible and would pay medical bills, transportation and lodging costs for relatives and would waive a state law that restricts the state’s liability.
