Canadian Wolf Hunt Sparks Controversy

Wildlife conservationists are angry because the provincial government has allowed a wolf hunt to begin in southeastern British Columbia.

Hunting and trapping permits have been issued for the killing of wolves in the Flathead area for the first time in 20 years, Environment Minister Bruce Strachan said. The government claims that an exploding wolf population is slaughtering local elk and moose populations.

Wildlife advocacy groups say members are organizing a tourism blockade to protest the hunt. The hunting season runs from Sept. 10 to Feb. 28. Hunters may kill one wolf, while trappers have an open bag limit.
