A 5-year-old boy was in good condition at Children’s Hospital Wednesday after his mother “went berserk” in a convenience store parking lot and stabbed him once in the chest Tuesday afternoon, Escondido police said.

Vicki Feria, also known as Vicki Florez, was arrested shortly after the incident and charged with assault with a deadly weapon and felony child endangering, said Escondido Police Lt. Earl Callander

Feria, 32, broke windows in her home on the 1100 block of East Mission Avenue in Escondido before walking with her four children to a convenience store at Lincoln Avenue and Fig Street, where she grabbed a knife out of a parked car and plunged it about half an inch into her son’s chest.

Ricardo Feria was taken by ambulance to Palomar Hospital, then was transferred by Life Flight helicopter to Children’s Hospital, Callander said. Feria’s other children, ages 4, 3 and 5 months, were taken into protective custody.

Feria is being held at the County Jail in Vista.
