Reduced winds helped firefighters come closer to containing a fire that burned 550 acres of brush in southeastern Mendocino County. California Department of Forestry spokesman Dave Drennan said that the blaze, 75 miles north of San Francisco, was 60% controlled. Two homes had been threatened but only one structure, an unoccupied cabin, was burned. The fire, which started in the Tyler Creek area, midway between Clearlake and Cloverdale, was intentionally set, investigators said. Although a crew of nearly 500 fought the blaze, only two firefighters suffered minor injuries.
