Constitution’s Bicentennial to Be Rung In

Red, white and blue balloons will fill the sky and bells will peal for 200 seconds at 1 p.m. Thursday as most South Bay cities and civic organizations join the nationwide observance of the 200th anniversary of the signing of the U. S. Constitution.

Several cities will also include special programs to mark the event. All begin at 12:30 p.m.

The Carson program includes a skit about the signing of the Constitution and entertainment by Carson Young Life Singers and Los Cabelleros Youth Band on the Civic Center grounds just east of the community center. A series of forums on Constitutional issues will be held in the community center from 2 to 4 p.m. and the reenactment of the signing will be repeated at 6.

In Rolling Hills Estates, a commemorative plaque will be installed in the grove next to City Hall. Mayor Hugh Miller will speak. The Palos Verdes Estates celebration in Malaga Cove Plaza will include comments from Mayor Edward Ritscher and music by the Palos Verdes High School band. The Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Torrance will sponsor “We the People Day” at the Jefferson Community Center, 21717 Talisman St. An original play, “The Spirit of ‘76,” will be presented by the RSVP Players. Redondo Beach Mayor Barbara Doerr will read a proclamation during a ceremony at City Hall and cake will be served. In Lomita, school children will release balloons at 1 p.m.
