Sept. 30 is the registration deadline for the third annual “Real Problem” design competition sponsored by the associates of the Los Angeles chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The competition--open to all students of architecture and non-licensed architectural professionals--will deal with the impact of the Alvarado/Wilshire Metro Rail station, scheduled to open in 1992.

Presentation drawings and a written statement must be submitted by Jan. 8 and judging will be held in March. Winners will receive prizes totaling $1,000.

The planned underground station at Alvarado Street and Wilshire Boulevard is across the street from MacArthur Park, in an area with economic blight and a growing transient population, according to LA/AIA associates president Allan York.

Individuals and teams can register at the chapter office, in the Pacific Design Center, 8687 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood. The entry fee is $15 per project.
