Boeing Co. announced the landing of a five-year, $235.5-million contract to design, build and test train stations and protective igloos for the Air Force’s Peacekeeper Rail Garrison program. The Seattle-based company will develop rail garrisons that will house 25 special trains carrying MX Peacekeeper missiles, which will be located at selected Air Force bases. Each selected base will contain a garrison housing up to four trains in protected, side-by-side shelters called igloos, the Air Force said. The trains, each consisting of seven or more cars and two missiles, would be on alert around the clock to move off the bases onto the 150,000-mile commercial rail network in times of national emergency. Boeing, which beat out Martin Marietta for the five-year job, will not work on the missile-launching cars themselves but rather the stations that will house them.
