The City Council has approved an agreement that will allow a professional boxing match featuring the third-ranked heavyweight contender to be held at the Celebrity Theatre later this month.

The council, sitting as the Redevelopment Agency, on Tuesday approved waiving provisions of a sales agreement that restricted uses of the facility to theater and arts-related activities.

From now on, theater managers can obtain waivers on an event-by-event basis to hold boxing matches and other activities not specifically allowed.

The site of the Celebrity Theatre, or Freedman Forum as it is also known, was bought by Leo Freedman from the Redevelopment Agency in 1985. Since its construction, the 2,300-seat theater-in-the-round has played host to many pop and rock acts.

The theater has scheduled a boxing card on Sept. 29 featuring the World Boxing Assn.’s third-ranked heavyweight challenger, Tony Tubbs, against Eddie Gonzalez.

James Woodin, a spokesman for Celebrity Theatre, said that both fighters will train in Anaheim and that the match is expected to attract international attention.
