An investigation has confirmed that former Hitler deputy Rudolf Hess hanged himself in Berlin last month, a statement by the four wartime Allies said. Hess’ family and neo-Nazi groups had expressed doubts that Hess, 93, committed suicide. But the statement said that Hess “hanged himself from a window latch in a small summer house in the prison garden, using an electrical cord . . . for use . . . with a reading lamp.” The Allies--Britain, France, the Soviet Union and the United States--also published part of the suicide note: “Please would the governors send this home. Written a few minutes before my death.”
