American League Roundup : Yankee Rally Knocks Blue Jays Out of East Lead, 6-5

Dan Pasqua singled home Willie Randolph from second base with two out in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday night at New York to give the New York Yankees a 6-5 victory over Toronto, dropping the Blue Jays into second place in the American League East.

Pasqua’s single to center made a winner of Dave Righetti (8-4), who entered in the ninth inning. Tom Henke (0-6), who lost a save opportunity when he gave up a run in the eighth, took the loss, which snapped a three-game Toronto winning streak. The game was delayed 85 minutes by rain in the sixth inning.

Randolph led off the ninth with a single and stole second. Two outs later, Pasqua blooped a single that landed in the wet grass in front of onrushing center fielder Lloyd Moseby to drop Toronto one-half game behind Detroit in the American League East.

The Yankees tied the score, 5-5, in the eighth. With one out, pinch hitter Phil Lombardi struck out but reached first on a passed ball. In the ensuing argument, Toronto Manager Jimy Williams was ejected. David Williams threw a wild pitch to move Lombardi to second, and Roberto Kelly ran for Lombardi.

Henke replaced Wells and retired Mike Easler, but Rickey Henderson singled home Kelly.

New York starter Steve Trout was given a four-run lead, but lost a chance for his first Yankee victory when Toronto scored five runs in the fifth. Trout threw two run-scoring wild pitches in the inning.

Chicago 9, Seattle 8--Carlton Fisk led off the 10th inning at Chicago with his 20th homer of the season, extending the White Sox’s winning streak to a season-high five games.

Fisk hit a 1-and-1 pitch from Bill Wilkinson (3-5) over the fence in left-center.
