Jesse Jackson, in a letter to Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, praised the Sandinista government for its “recent efforts to attain peace in Central America and end the violence.”

In the letter dated Wednesday, Jackson said he noted “with satisfaction” the announcement this week that the Nicaraguan government was allowing the reopening of the opposition newspaper La Prensa.

“I reflected back to our meeting last summer, when we discussed the need to maintain open media communications, a high regard for the church and a continued search for peace,” the Democratic presidential hopeful wrote. “You have followed our discussions with a meeting with the bishops last fall, an endorsement of the Arias peace plan, and now, the reopening of La Prensa.”
