A national strike by the 23,000-member Canadian Union of Postal Workers was suspended for the weekend after the government threatened to adopt legislation forcing the employees back to work. Postal workers are striking over a plan by the state-owned Canada Post Corp. to cut costs by offering franchises to drugstores and other outlets. The union claims the plan would eliminate 4,200 jobs. Most striking workers returned to work late Friday except in Montreal, where 3,000 workers defied the union’s rotating strike tactic and went on a general walkout. Strikers there also burned two empty mail trucks, police said.
