The federal Product Safety Commission has voted to begin a formal rule-making procedure that could either ban or regulate lawn darts like the one that killed a Riverside County youngster six months ago. The process is expected to take about 18 months as the agency studies the large, pointed darts, which are made under various brand names and are tossed toward a ring or hoop on the ground in a game similar to horseshoes. The commission’s action comes after the death of 7-year-old Michelle Snow of Riverside, who died three days after being struck in the head by a dart lobbed into the air by a playmate.
