The number of newly reported AIDS cases in San Francisco last month reached the second highest total ever recorded in the city, partly because of a new definition of the fatal disease. Dr. George Lemp, chief of the surveillance branch of the city Health Department’s AIDS office, said that 124 new cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome were reported in September, as well as 84 AIDS-related deaths. The only month with more cases was July, with 143.
