A House committee, bowing to the wishes of an Indian member of Congress, removed from its hearing room a painting showing an Indian scalping a settler. The painting is one of six done more than a century ago by a retired Army general that hang in the meeting rooms of the House Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs. The painting depicts an Indian holding the scalp of a white settler in one hand and a knife in the other hand. The scalping scene was removed at the request of Rep. Ben Nighthorse Campbell (D-Colo.), a Cheyenne Indian, who said it was “in very poor taste.”
