ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Roundup : Navarette Throws for 3 Touchdowns

Quarterback Robert Navarette threw three touchdown passes to lead Valencia High School to a 24-7 victory over Cypress Thursday night in a nonleague football game in front of 650 at Western High School.

Navarette’s 19-yard pass to Marty Dunn in the first quarter gave Valencia (4-1) a 7-0 lead. But Cypress came back with a 14-play, 87-yard drive capped by a 17-yard touchdown run by Doug Lytle to tie the score, 7-7, early in the second quarter.

Valencia’s Paul Rivera kicked a 25-yard field goal late in the second quarter to give his team a 10-7 halftime lead.

Navarette then passed for a pair of third-quarter touchdowns to Mike Edwards to put the game out of reach. The first was for 18 yards and the second was 15.

Randy Roskelly, who took over for the injured Keef Leasure, rushed for 110 yards in 21 carries. Leasure, who injured his ankle last week, carried just 5 times Thursday for 10 yards before leaving the game in the second quarter.

Cypress (0-5) was led by quarterback Pete Dopulos, who completed 14 of 20 passes for 135 yards.

In other nonleague games:

Sonora 35, Magnolia 7--Quarterback Bill Robb threw three touchdown passes as the Raiders won at Glover Stadium in front of 200.

Sonora (3-1-1) scored 28 points in the first half and 21 in the first quarter. Robb’s first scoring pass was for 33 yards to Kurt Takahashi to tie the score at 7-7 in the first quarter. He then threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Chris Shenk to give Sonora a 14-7 lead in the second quarter. Robb’s last scoring pass was good for 7 yards to Marcus Mataya to give Sonora a 21-7 advantage.

Robb completed 10 of 15 passes for 128 yards. Magnolia (0-5) was limited to 111 total yards and Sonora had 427 yards.

Irvine 27, Villa Park 19--George Koutures caught a pass for a touchdown, threw a pass for a touchdown and kicked a field goal and three extra points to lead Irvine (3-2) at Fred Kelly Stadium. Irvine opened a 27-0 lead after three quarters before Villa Park (3-2) scored 19 points in the final quarter.
