President Reagan will ask Congress to vote on $270 million in new aid to the Nicaraguan contras after the Nov. 7 deadline for implementation of the Central American peace plan, Secretary of State George P. Shultz said Friday.

“The President at the appropriate moment after Nov. 7, but before the end of November, will request a vote on additional aid for the resistance,” Shultz said in a speech to a gathering in Chicago.

“The forms this aid will take will depend entirely on what happens in the implementation of the (Central American) agreement,” Shultz added. “If the agreement works as we all hope, it will be directed toward the peaceful reintegration of the resistance in a free Nicaragua. If it does not, it will be used to enable the struggle for freedom to continue until it does succeed.”
