Ex-IRA Man Killed in Belfast Shooting
BELFAST, Northern Ireland — Suspected Protestant gunmen burst into the home of a 66-year-old former member of the outlawed Irish Republican Army on Friday and killed him as he lay asleep with his wife, police said.
The man’s 16-year-old nephew was shot and wounded in the hand by the two masked gunmen as they fled the house in a Belfast IRA stronghold. Police did not immediately identify the victim, a father of 11 and retired taxi driver, pending notification of his children.
Police said the man was shot in the chest as he lay asleep with his wife but the woman was not injured.
No group immediately claimed responsibility for the killing. But police suspected Protestant paramilitary gunmen who are pledged to killing Roman Catholics with any connection to the IRA.
