Golf Roundup : Dodds, Edwards Pensacola Leaders

Trevor Dodds and 1985 champion Danny Edwards shot 67s for the second consecutive day Friday to tie for the lead at the halfway point of the $300,000 Pensacola Open golf tournament at Pensacola, Fla.

Dodds and Edwards were at eight-under-par 134 after two rounds over the 7,154-yard Perdido Bay Resort course.

Dodds birdied the last three holes Thursday for a 67, and Friday, he matched that score with four birdies. Edwards’ roller-coaster round included six birdies and two bogeys.

John Mahaffey, who started the day one stroke ahead after a first-round 66, fell one stroke off the pace with a 69. He was tied at 135 with Doug Tewell, who shot a second-round 66 that included his second eagle in as many days.

Phil Blackmar was two strokes behind the leaders after a second-round 69.

Arnold Palmer had eight birdies while shooting a six-under-par 66 to take a one-stroke lead in the first round of the $250,000 Senior Challenge tournament at Roswell, Ga.

Dave Hill and Buck Adams each shot a 67 on the 6,702-yard Horseshoe Bend Country Club course. Another shot back was Miller Barber, while Larry Mowry and Bill Collins were at 70.

Palmer, who has won 61 PGA Tour events and 9 senior tournaments, has gone winless since taking the Senior Tournament Players Championship in the spring of 1985.

Ireland’s Christy O’Conner shot a five-under-par 67 and tied favored Bernhard Langer of West Germany for the halfway lead in the $444,000 German Masters tournament at Stuttgart. O’Conner and Langer, who shot a second-round 69, were at 137 after 36 holes. American Tommy Armour III was at 138.
