A 37-year-old transient was fatally wounded by police on Skid Row after he advanced on officers while brandishing a four-foot pipe, daring them to kill him as he backed them against a parked car, police said Sunday.

Carlos Brummel died at County-USC Medical Center shortly after undergoing surgery for a bullet wound in his chest, police said.

Lt. William Hall said Brummel had been walking with the pipe in the middle of San Pedro Street near 2nd Street interfering with traffic, when officers Edward Wilson, 24, and Tracy Stange, 29, drove up and asked him to get out of the street.

When he refused, Hall said, the officers got out of the car and Brummel advanced on them saying he would not drop the pipe unless they killed him. The officers backed up until they were forced against the car. At that point, Wilson fired one shot, fatally wounding Brummel.
