Marty Froelick of Colorado Springs, Colo., took command in the final five miles to win the men’s competition of the sixth annual Twin Cities Marathon, while Sylvie Bournet of Missous, France, ran away with the women’s division.

About 7,000 runners took part in the $200,000 race, which began in 24-degree weather in Minneapolis. Froelick and Bournet each won $25,000.

Froelick, 29, dueled for several miles with Mark Curp, 28, of Lee’s Summit, Mo., and Paul Gompers, 23, of Fairview Heights, Ill., before opening up a lead heading up one of the few hills in the mostly flat course.

His winning time of 2:10:59 was 39 seconds better than Gompers. Gompers surged past Curp in the final stages of the race.

Bournet, 27, finished 5 1/2 minutes ahead of runner-up Kim Rosenquist, 29, of Spokane, Wash. Her winning time of 2:30:11 was a course record and bettered her previous best of 2:31:43.
