NHL Roundup : Hawerchuk Helps Jets Remain Unbeaten

Dale Hawerchuk, who holds 19 team records, came up with another big game for Winnipeg, scoring one goal and assisting on three others to help the Jets remain the only unbeaten team in the National Hockey League with a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota North Stars at Bloomington, Minn.

After a scoreless first period, the Jets (3-0-0) outshot Minnesota, 23-7, in the second 20 minutes and took a 2-1 lead they never relinquished. They added three goals in the third period.

“Every time things had to get done, he (Hawerchuk) was the man,” Winnipeg Coach Dan Maloney said.

Goalie Dan Beaupre stopped 38 shots to keep the North Stars in the game. Winnipeg’s Pokey Reddick faced only 21 shots, turning away 19.

Hartford 4, New Jersey 3--Sylvain Turgeon’s deflection goal 3:59 into overtime at Hartford, Conn., gave the Whalers their first victory of the season after opening 0-5.

Dave Babych fired a low shot from the right point that hit Turgeon and bounced past goalie Alain Chevrier. That gave Hartford the win after blowing a 3-0 first-period lead, with one of the goals coming from Dave (Tiger) Williams.

The Devils scored twice in the second period and tied the game with 40 seconds left in regulation on a goal by Pat Verbeek, his second of the game.

Philadelphia 4, N.Y. Islanders 3--The Flyers, coming back from a 6-0 loss to New York Thursday, got a double measure of revenge by spoiling the Islanders’ home opener at Uniondale, N.Y., and knocking them from the ranks of the undefeated.

Rookie Brian Dobbin scored with 22 seconds left in the game to decide it.

Pat LaFontaine and Denis Potvin had goals 89 seconds apart in the third period to bring the Islanders even, 3-3.

Toronto 7, Detroit 4--Todd Gill and Gary Leeman scored twice each, and Miroslav Frycer had a goal and three assists to pace the Maple Leafs in a fight-filled game at Toronto.

Gill scored both his goals in the second period, when the Maple Leafs took a 5-2 lead. Leeman provided the insurance, with both of his scores coming in the final 20 minutes.

Referee Dave Newell assessed 28 minor penalties and 4 majors, 2 10-minute misconducts and game misconducts to Dave Semenko of Toronto and Gerard Gallant of Detroit.

Montreal 3, Pittsburgh 2--The Penguins, who haven’t won at Montreal since Dec. 4, 1980, were beaten this time on Guy Carbonneau’s goal with 1:55 to play.

Before giving up the winning goal, Penguin goalie Frank Pietrangelo was the big story, and not just because he stopped 24 shots in his NHL debut. His play was highlighted with several big saves in the first two periods and even better ones in the third, including making a save on Carbonneau on a breakaway with four minutes left in the game.

Edmonton 4, Boston 3--The Oilers squandered a 3-1 lead midway through the second period only to come back to win at Edmonton as Normand Lacombe scored during a goalmouth scramble with seven minutes left in the game.

Randy Burridge had a pair of goals for the Bruins.

Washington 4, N.Y. Rangers 3--Rod Langway and Dale Hunter scored 48 seconds apart late in the third period at Landover, Md., to lift the Capitals and give the Rangers (2-1-2) their first loss of the season.

Chicago 3, St. Louis 2--Wayne Presley scored two goals, and Denis Savard added the game-winner, in the second period, at St. Louis to lead the Blackhawks and keep the Blues (0-4) the only team without a point.

Buffalo 6, Quebec 3--Steve Dykstra triggered a three-goal first period and Adam Creighton collected three assists to lead the Sabres at Quebec City, Canada, and give the Nordiques their first loss of the season.
