“Willa Cather: Her Collected Stories.” The Cassette Book Co. Two cassettes; unabridged. There are in fact six Cather stories here, some of them set in the trans-Mississippi Midwest of her youth, all of them with spiritual ties to it, even if the protragonists have fled to Boston or Paris. The most engaging stories (“The Enchanted Bluff,” “The Way of the World,” “On the Divide”) capture with sympathetic accuracy life--hard, thrilling, occasionally sweet--in the still-raw frontier country of small towns and big skies. Barbara Mee’s readings have a softly lilting fairy-tale-by-the-fireside quality that is ingratiating if not always perfectly appropriate to the harsher contents.
