The nine Roman Catholic bishops of Haiti criticized a decision by politicians associated with the former ruling Duvalier family to run for office in elections next month. In statements, they questioned whether the Duvalierists “have decided to reconquer power in order to perpetuate the old system.” The most prominent Duvalierists to have filed candidacy papers are former Finance Minister Clovis Desinor and former Defense and Interior Minister Claude Raymond, both seeking the presidency, and former Port-au-Prince Mayor Franck Romain, who is seeking his old post.
